Single station punching head – Intelligence is all in the head

The single station punching head is the vital component of every TRUMPF punching machine. It always holds one single tool at a time. Since the tools can be rotated to any desired angle, fewer tool changes are required, drastically reducing setup times.

How the single station punching head works
The punching head is flanged directly onto the machine frame. The long, hydrostatic tool guide in the ram ensures precision punch guidance and thus high quality punching results.

The hydraulic punching head is optimized in terms of both power and energy. The required punching force level is selected automatically, depending on the punching tonnage needed.

The hydraulic ram features a dedicated NC axis which automatically adapts the start and reversal point of ram motion to the material thickness that is being worked. A hydraulic pump generates the requisite oil pressure which, through a cylinder, then generates a punching stroke.

Advantages of the single station punching head

  • Reduced setup minimizes machining times
As TRUMPF machines can rotate every tool 360° – regardless of their type and size – fewer tool changes are needed. Advantage: Shorter machining times.

  • Process reliability through integrated vacuum slug removal
The principle of the single station punching head enables the vacuum removal of punching slugs. Slugs are reliably sucked out at 150 – 200 mbar. The punch has to penetrate the die only briefly. Advantage: Higher stroke rates and improved process reliability.

  • Higher part quality
Thanks to the single station punching head, a smaller die clearance can be used. The cutting portion increases and the fracture portion decreases. Advantage: Higher parts quality.

  • Compensation for variations in sheet thickness
The optional adaptive stroke calibration compensates for sheet thickness tolerances. At the same time, the cold-hot behavior of the machine can be compensated as well. Advantage: Consistently high parts quality.

  • Use of Multitools
With the single station punching head – as opposed to other solutions – all tools can be subjected to off-center loads. This ensures that Multitools and Whispertools can be used reliably and safely.
